Iola unidentified light report — January 13, 1967

At about 1:30 a.m. on January 13, 1967, nine-year-old Freddie Amos reportedly woke at his family's dairy farm near Iola, Kansas, and saw an object hovering low over an adjoining field. HUMCAT expands the short NICAP entry: he estimated a round body 25 feet across, a dome, short winglike projections and three wheels beneath it. Red lights marked the projections and a blue light the dome. A door reportedly opened between two illuminated windows. A man in a crinkled green uniform stood in it, while another figure was visible sitting at a desk farther inside. The doorway figure's face remained in shadow. Freddie was frightened but could not explain what made the figure seem alarming. He returned to bed and watched the object circle the house, return to its earlier position for several minutes, and leave. The following morning, cattle were reportedly found to have broken a fence, with one animal injured, and a nearby pond was said to remain unfrozen during cold weather. Those associations do not establish a cause. HUMCAT cites Mary Conger's special report to NICAP and the Colorado Project, rather than an independent confirmation of occupants. The plate follows the boy's observation and shadowed faces, excluding the injured animal and any invented interaction with the child.
