Case description
At about 00:50 on 10 November 1978, Powell was driving from St Lunaire toward St Anthony, Newfoundland, with Shirley Murrin as passenger. According to the RCMP telegram, a bright light came up from behind on the passenger side. The women described an elongated, snowshoe-like shape with a bright yellow centre and revolving green, red and white lights around its outside.
The light reportedly illuminated the car interior and followed them toward St Anthony. Powell tried to escape it. The telegram gives a duration of about twenty-five minutes and a following distance along the road of approximately seven miles; these are reported estimates, not a reconstructed speed calculation. Murrin said that when she put an arm outside the window it felt warm and then numb from the heat. The page supplies no clinical finding that independently establishes an injury or its cause.
The report was forwarded from St Anthony on 14 November and records clear weather and the women’s serious concern. It does not describe any occupants or a resolved mechanical structure behind the light. The snowshoe comparison therefore guides the luminous outline in the reconstruction, while the two women and their car remain the principal human subjects.
