Case description
Daniel Chaplin, eighteen, reported a bright falling object from his home at Middle Stewiacke, Colchester County, Nova Scotia, at approximately 22:15 on 29 May 1980. He had been sitting beside a window watching television. Facing east under a clear sky, he noticed the object about sixty degrees above the horizon, descending rapidly southeast at a steep angle.
Chaplin described it as bluish-white, extremely bright and approximately a quarter of the Moon’s apparent size. He thought it may have flared once. It disappeared behind a tree in front of the window before reaching the horizon. Following a radio appeal, William MacDonald and Ron Nolan separately reported bright fireball-like observations from vehicles in different locations. Their accounts included green or bluish-green colours and differing viewing directions; they should not be depicted as a single group beside Chaplin.
The RCMP contacted Halifax airport, which had no matching report, and Search and Rescue, which noted maritime flare activity and a military exercise offshore. Professor Rupert McNeill suggested a meteor and doubted a military origin. The investigators noted that details had not been supplied in the appeal, supporting the independence of the later descriptions without proving one explanation. No occupants or structured craft were reported. The plate selects Chaplin’s window observation, with the brief bluish-white fireball and no inferred spacecraft.
