Canada reported unidentified aerial event — 1981-04-05 — Rimbey, AB

On 5 April 1981, Bill Muncaster reported an unusual object from his residence east of Rimbey, Alberta. The observation began around 20:15 at dusk, about an hour before his police call. Under cloudy skies and strong winds, he saw two flashing red lights separated by an estimated hundred to two hundred feet. He interpreted the dim shape between them as bluish gray and bell-like, with a spotlight reaching toward the ground. The object appeared to hover above the trees, moved slowly north in two stages and finally seemed to tip and disappear after about twenty minutes. Several family members and other witnesses agreed broadly about separated red lights and slow northerly movement. Their important disagreement was that most could not see a body or shape in the darkness. No occupants were reported. The absence of audible noise was qualified by the prevailing wind. Police subsequently interviewed Tom Moberg and Eric Poulsen, who had observed the same lights. Moberg said Penhold personnel, then in radio contact with the aircraft, identified two aircraft flying in formation against strong headwinds. The apparent stopping and tipping were explained as their search for easier flying conditions. On 30 April, Transport Canada confirmed that two helicopters had been in the area at the relevant date and time, and the RCMP closed the file. The illustration therefore preserves the original view of distant paired lights while labeling the documented aircraft explanation, rather than rendering a solid alien bell as established fact.
