Case description

At about 23:00 Mountain Standard Time on 22 August 1981, campers at Sibbald Flats west of Calgary reported unusual lights. The RCMP telegram identifies Barbara Joan Sawer and Edward Rhodes, a University of Calgary meteorology professor, as the principal witnesses. A later covering letter locates their campsite at Pine Grove, approximately sixty kilometres west of the city. The sky was described as clear and cloudless. The witnesses reported a series of lights, including white along the bottom, a predominance of red, and blue and green. The white light was described as exceptionally bright. The telegram gives a prolonged observation of about four hours. Those words do not establish a particular metal airframe: the surviving description concerns the arrangement and appearance of lights rather than measured dimensions or a close view of a solid hull. The correspondence says photographs were supplied, but the reviewed pages do not provide an authenticated photograph from which additional features can be extracted. Other people were camping nearby, yet their presence should not automatically be counted as independent testimony. The file describes no occupants or contact. The illustration keeps the two main observers beside their campsite and leaves the distant object unresolved.
