Case description

On October 3, 1981, Albert and Elizabeth Violet Punch were returning toward Garden Hill on Island Lake, Manitoba, after cutting firewood. Their three young sons were with them in an outboard boat. Elizabeth recalled approximately 8:30 p.m.; Albert gave about 8:45. She noticed a light approaching from behind, and Albert initially stopped the engine deliberately to listen. He reported no sound from the object. Both parents described a cone or lightbulb-shaped object with a pointed top and rounded bottom. White lights flashed around it, with blue illumination above. They said it descended close to the lake, where arc-like flashes appeared between its underside and the water. Both associated its approach with a subsequent engine stoppage; Albert reported that the motor restarted after it moved away. The family continued around an island, seeing the glow on the other side before returning home. Their size estimates differed dramatically: Albert suggested at least 200 feet in diameter, Elizabeth approximately fifteen feet across the bottom. These incompatible estimates remain in their signed statements. Neither described occupants, beings or an abduction; electrical arcs must not be transformed into entities. RCMP Constable Craig Cochrane interviewed Albert on October 24 and Elizabeth on October 25. He considered them sincere, but that judgment does not establish the object's identity or cause of the motor problem. The children were not interviewed because of their ages. The original file supports an investigated family sighting near Island Lake, not the imported database's southern coordinates or occupant classification.
