Case description
The Haines Junction record concerns a motorist on the Northwest Highway System near Mile 984, rather than an occupant encounter. The RCMP report is dated 20 July 1965, but its subject line places the sighting on 18 July. That administrative date was promoted to an event date in the imported record. The complainant was driving his own car west from Mendenhall toward the Aishihik Road when, after cresting a rise near Mile 983, he descended into a valley.
A bright white light suddenly appeared ahead and to his left. It traveled rapidly from south to north in a short, looping motion, emerging from the southern trees, passing directly over the highway and disappearing roughly two hundred yards ahead of his car. The sight lasted only a fraction of a second. He heard no sound, saw no trail and thought the light much brighter than the single star then visible to the west. Trees obscured part of his view; the report offers no resolved vehicle structure.
An officer searched along Miles 983–985, including a viewpoint above the wooded, marshy ground, without finding tracks, burned ground or a meteorite. No aircraft was reported overdue or crashed. The follow-up suggested the light might have been part of a larger meteorite obscured by trees, without recovering physical proof. The archive's weather reference describes dawn conditions with scattered cloud. The plate therefore shows only the brief white light and driver, with no invented occupants, wreckage or landed craft.
