Canada reported unidentified aerial event — 1968-12-30 — Spruce Lake St. John, NB

Several people in the Spruce Lake area of Saint John, New Brunswick, reported an unusual light on 30 December 1968. A man first noticed it while driving home along the Golden Mile Road, then pointed it out to his sister and nearby residents. Their names are redacted. The police narrative gives approximately 20:30 Atlantic Standard Time, while the initial telex appears to give 19:30; the date is consistent. Witnesses compared its apparent size to a helicopter and its form to a half-moon, flat beneath and rounded above. A yellowish-white light covered the object, varying between bright and dim. Red and green lights were also mentioned. It sometimes appeared very high and at other moments only a few hundred yards away, illustrating the uncertainty of night-time distance estimates. Some observers followed along Route 1 toward St. George, estimating speeds between forty and sixty miles an hour. The observation lasted roughly three-quarters of an hour. Constable G. McLean’s later report says the people questioned gave broadly similar descriptions and appeared sober and reliable. No further action was planned unless instructed. That assessment did not identify the light, establish measured speed or verify a craft’s dimensions. No occupants, landing or physical trace were recorded.
