Canada reported unidentified aerial event — 1968-12-30 — Corner Brock Area, NFLD

On 30 December 1968, at about 5:30 p.m., a woman reported a strange object over the Blomidon Golf Course at Corner Brook, Newfoundland. She initially described a large metallic-looking object apparently hovering for about half an hour, with revolving light beneath it, before disappearing. Police subsequently obtained accounts from two CBC employees who had seen a coloured glow at the same time and place. Those employees described yellowish vapour-like light changing through red and blue rather than a resolved metal object. They had seen an aircraft pass and considered its vapour trail illuminated by sunset a likely explanation. The police file distinguishes this transient December observation from repeated reports of a brilliant object low in the western sky during subsequent evenings in early January. For the recurring evening light, officers consulted a Deer Lake resident with an observatory who identified Venus and explained apparent scintillation and movement near the horizon. The final report treated the December event as sunset light on aircraft vapour and the later persistent object as Venus, submitting the material for information rather than classifying it as an unidentified vehicle. These are recorded contemporary explanations, not proof of an occupant encounter.
