Case description
This Smiths Falls record preserves a copy of the same Oscar Fader report represented elsewhere in the Atlas as Smith’s Falls. The RCMP investigation is dated November 3, 1969, describing events on October 29. Archive copies are a documentary duplication, not independent corroboration by two additional witnesses.
Fader said he left his Smiths Falls home at about 5:35 a.m. for work at Merrickville. Approximately three miles outside town on Highway 43, he stopped because the car was heating, opened the hood and waited. He then noticed a large reddish ball of fire toward Smiths Falls. It crossed the horizon from north to south in about ten seconds. He heard no accompanying noise. Conditions were clear, brisk and frosty, and the sky appeared bluish.
Town police and CJET reported a sonic boom around 5:43 a.m.; Fader’s wife heard it and awoke. Uplands advised that jet exercises were occurring. The investigator attributed the case to a jet breaking the sound barrier, although the written clock times differ by several minutes. No occupants or resolved aircraft were reported. The plate depicts Fader’s visual observation, leaving the separate sound and proposed explanation attributed to the report.
