Case description

Lawrence Charles Smith and his brother Manus Eugene reported fiery orange-red lights while driving between the Bear Point roads toward Shag Harbour, Nova Scotia, at about 21:30–21:40 on 25 November 1970. Their accounts describe five or six round lights thirty to fifty feet above the road. Lawrence’s diagram places them at different levels, rather than in the straight four-light line reported from another locality that evening. They said the car seemed to stop without the usual sensation of braking and their tape player stopped, resuming after a light blinked out and returned. Lawrence was unsure whether the motor itself stopped and uncertain about elapsed time. The brothers supplied different estimates for light diameter and apparent height. The lights reportedly disappeared without obvious movement after twenty to thirty seconds. These statements do not establish measured electrical interference, missing time or an abduction. Constable R. E. Keeping immediately revisited the wooded site with them and found no unusual object. His report considered the men sober and credible. A separate handwritten file memo, however, relays that they had been jacklighting deer and questions aspects of the story; that concern should remain visible alongside the favourable assessment. Keeping also interviewed a military corporal and two women about four lights roughly twenty miles away at the same local time. No occupants or resolved craft body were described at either site. The plate selects the brothers’ five-light version without merging those different vantage points.
