PORT VILA (988) 07.06.1978

On 7 June 1978 between 19:30 and 20:00, 3 fishermen aboard a boat near Port Vila watched an intriguing light for several minutes. A white light moved slowly along the coast, then toward them. When it drew level with them, they reported a craft with colored flames emerging silently from its rear. It abruptly turned back toward the coast and suddenly disappeared, leaving them deeply impressed. Other witnesses reported a sighting that evening, but their description to the gendarmerie suggested a shooting star. The investigation ruled out an aircraft, boat, weather balloon or navigation lights for the fishermen's event. Despite a thorough inquiry, that observation remains unidentified.
