After a shallow crater of unknown origin was found in a wheat field in Aigrefeuille, an investigation took place during March and April 1983. Investigators abandoned the idea of an underground explosion involving Second World War ammunition and considered a natural cause. They established that the crater formed on 15 March, when a severe thunderstorm produced a violent clap of thunder. GEIPAN concludes that a lightning strike probably formed the crater.
