RENTREE ATMOSPHERIQUE — NATIONAL (FR) 17.03.1997

After regional newspapers on 18 March 1997 reported several sightings from 17 March, a gendarmerie investigation was requested. Witnesses across southern French departments, several flight crews and a Mirage 2000 pilot training over the Mediterranean described a green light crossing the sky very rapidly early in the morning, descending towards the Pyrenees. Several gendarmerie units took witness statements. The descriptions fit a probable meteoroid atmospheric entry on the morning of 17 March 1997. Other observations reported to gendarmerie units that evening concern separate cases, available on GEIPAN’s website under the same date.
