Case description
Around 01:00 during the night of 27–28 June 1998, a lone motorist on the D 17 between Prades-le-Lez and Saint-Mathieu-de-Tréviers said his engine, lights and radio stopped near electrical pylons. He pulled over, noticed a pale green light to the right and walked toward it. He then felt unable to move his legs. His 1 July police statement and accompanying sketch provide more detail than the short catalogue summary.
He described a low, horizontally tapering body approximately 10 metres long,5 wide and 2 high, hovering just above the ground. Although called conical, the sketch shows an elongated pointed planform with a broad rear, not an upright cone. A roughly 1.5 metre figure approached its open walkway and waved without turning. It appeared white and hairless, with an oval head, four fingers including one longer than the others, and a seamless covering without collar or cuffs. Two similar figures sat in two of three interior seats.
The figure entered, the opening closed, lights went out and the object reportedly departed vertically within seconds. The witness returned to his car and later recognised a memory gap covering roughly 21:00–01:00 before the observation. He did not report being taken aboard. A return visit with his mother and police examination yielded no traces.
GEIPAN changed the original D classification to C because the extraordinary single account lacked independent corroboration and reliable physical evidence, while the preceding memory gap complicated assessment. The reconstruction follows the actual sketch and reported figures, with facial details left unverified.
