[AERO AFR] ROISSY-EN-FRANCE (95) 07.07.2005

On 7 July 2005 at 14:14 UT, the captain of flight AF7705 approaching Charles de Gaulle airport reported passing within about half a nautical mile or less of a gray, apparently stationary object. The pilot's sketch shows an hourglass shape. It looked metallic, entirely unlike a weather balloon, and did not seem to be in free fall. This encounter, reported through an Airprox, is unusual. The shape matches neither scientific nor leisure or festive balloons. No radar echo was reported, and the aviation authorities' ground-based local analysis found no explanation. The source does not specify whether other pilots saw it. A balloon escaped from EuroDisney was considered, but its shape and color seem incompatible: balloons are generally convex, and investigators would expect EuroDisney balloons to be brightly colored. Further investigation, including searches for other sightings or enquiries at EuroDisney, is no longer possible. The case is classified C: insufficient information.
