(DPT) MOSELLE (57) 11.05.2008

On 11 May 2008 at about 22:50, 2 witnesses in Moselle saw a dark triangular mass pass rapidly at low altitude. It had both steady and flashing white, green and red lights. During the observation, which lasted several tens of seconds, they heard a faint low-pitched sound. In addition to the main account, several further reports followed press coverage of this older sighting. The case was eventually assessed by the expert panel working with GEIPAN. Judged to have low unusualness, it was classified B as a probable aircraft, an explanation suggested in one of the unsolicited accounts. GEIPAN describes it as a typical case of reversing or confusing aircraft-light characteristics, including which white, green and red lights were steady or flashing.
