Case description
On 5 May 2012 around 22:00 at Plage des Hattes near Mana in French Guiana, in the Awala-Yalimapo (973) case, a witness saw several puzzling red spheres moving slowly and silently through the sky.
GEIPAN concludes that the 3 objects observed and photographed by witness 1 were probably sky lanterns, also called Thai lanterns. Supporting details are their red colour, slow simultaneous ascent, no or very little wind, a day of the week favourable to lantern releases, and a lantern retailer recently established in the department. The case is classified B: very probable sky lanterns.
