On 16 September 2012 at 22:16, a witness at Le Tampon saw a very bright yellow object coming from the southwest and moving rapidly toward the mountain above the horizon. It followed a descending path and split into 2 pieces, which disappeared beyond the horizon to the northeast. GEIPAN considers the description entirely consistent with a fragmenting fireball, very probably caused by a meteoroid entering the atmosphere. The case is classified B.
