BONS-EN-CHABLAIS (74) 16.09.2012

On 16 September 2012 at 20:24, a witness on a balcony in Bons-en-Chablais (74) saw a white point of light move silently east to west and disappear behind the Jura mountains. The observation lasted 4 seconds. No other account was collected. GEIPAN rates strangeness as moderate and the evidential basis good: 1 witness but a very precise account. The event could be a natural atmospheric entry, a fireball or meteor. The description is characteristic, but no additional witness was found to establish the explanation formally. GEIPAN attributes the misidentification to interpretation of a brief twilight sighting rather than a problem with visual perception. It classifies the case B: probable fireball.
