On 9 October 2012 at 23:32, 2 people in Lieu-Saint-Amand saw a white point of light move rapidly from east to west across a dark, starry sky. Only 1 account was submitted.
GEIPAN considers a white point crossing the sky in a few seconds suggestive of a fireball, a large shooting star caused by a meteoroid entering the atmosphere; the source also uses “meteorite” parenthetically. The absence of a trail was unusual. The event was not recorded in BOAM, the meteor observers’ database. The available evidence was insufficient to confirm a fireball, although GEIPAN regarded it as plausible and noted the Delta Aurigids’ activity peak on 10 October.
The case is classified C for insufficient information. The source also notes a similar observation in Limoges 20 minutes earlier that same day.
