Open this case in the interactive AtlasCase description
On 9 October 2012 between 23:00 and 23:30 in Limoges (87), a witness in his garden saw a white glow with a small bluish halo move rapidly through a slightly cloudy sky. Five minutes later he recognised a shooting star passing.
GEIPAN notes that a white point crossing in a few seconds suggests a fireball, a large shooting star produced by atmospheric entry of a meteoroid, also called a “meteorite” in the source. The absence of a trail is unusual. The event was not recorded in BOAM, the meteor observers' database. Evidence is insufficient to confirm the fireball hypothesis, though it remains plausible, with Delta Aurigid activity peaking on 10 October.
GEIPAN classifies the case C for insufficient information. It notes a similar sighting at Lieu-Saint-Amand (59) the same day, 20 minutes later.
