TRIEMBACH-AU-VAL (67) 07.01.2013

On 7 January 2013 at 04:13, a motorist in Triembach-au-Val (67) saw a flash followed by a ball shedding several fragments during a 3-second sighting. No other account was collected. GEIPAN finds the description typical of a fireball, a meteoroid entering the atmosphere. The date was near the end of the Quadrantid meteor shower. France was heavily cloud-covered except in the southeast, while Germany, in the viewing direction, was somewhat clearer. The early hour probably explains the sole account, and the phenomenon had a better chance of being seen in Germany. BOAM has no recording, probably because of clouds. GEIPAN classifies this case as B: probable observation of a fireball, or meteoroid atmospheric entry.
