MOISSIEU-SUR-DOLON (38), Rhône-Alpes, FR
Open this case in the interactive AtlasCase description
On 16 February 2013 at 19:32, a witness in Moissieu-sur-Dolon looked through a glazed door and saw an orange ball move very rapidly and silently along a straight path. It crossed about 45° of sky from east to west in 3 seconds.
GEIPAN considers atmospheric entry of a meteoroid, also termed a meteorite parenthetically in the source, a likely explanation. The lack of a trail and spirals described by the witness are unusual but not incompatible with it. Thus, the source mentions both a straight path and spirals. BOAM’s camera network reported no event at that time, but had no camera covering the southern Alps. GEIPAN received no other sighting report that day.
Despite the unusual features, the case is classified B: probable fireball from a meteoroid entering the atmosphere.
