Case description

On 3 June 2013, a witness saw an intriguing light moving southeast. He supplied several different times: in the questionnaire dated 6 June, 23:18 and a range of 23:15–00:00; in an email, 22:48 (see correspondence); and in the official report dated 2 August, about 23:30. He saw the same phenomenon again on 5 June at exactly 23:45. He described a very white light about 4 times larger than a star, passing near his home and making very rapid zigzags before moving out of view (see his attached sketch). GEIPAN’s CalSky check identifies the 5 June sighting as the ISS with certainty. The conflicting times for 3 June are insufficiently precise to establish the same identification (see attached CalSky document). The reported changes of direction contradict an ISS path, but GEIPAN attributes them to the autokinetic illusion, common in ISS sightings. The case is classified B: probable observation of the ISS, with slight doubt remaining because of the imprecise time.
