Case description
On 6 June 2013 at 22:10, a motorist traveling on the D822 from Villefranche-de-Rouergue (12) toward Figeac (46) noticed 2 seemingly stationary lights. He continued driving, then stopped and distinguished 2 separate shapes. No particular sound was heard during the sighting or as the lights disappeared toward the north-northwest. He took 2 mobile-phone photographs. No other account was collected.
The investigation placed the Sun 8° below the horizon, about 30 minutes after sunset. Bright Vega was visible to the east at azimuth 65° and elevation 32°. Météociel data and the Souillac weather record indicated a clear sky and almost no wind.
GEIPAN considered sunlit aircraft but states that aircraft at 10, 000 m would no longer be illuminated 30 minutes after sunset. It also considered stars or planets seen through thin cloud, but found no matching pair of stars. Illuminated balloons or sky lanterns remained possible, although a release was less likely on a weekday and the detailed description did not fit usual lantern reports well.
The distant lights, apparently moving slightly, have low unusualness but remain unexplained for lack of information or other accounts. The case is classified as C. GEIPAN judged the low unusualness insufficient to justify a deeper investigation.
