Around 22:00 on Wednesday 3 July 2013, a Grenoble witness closing his shutters saw waves of luminous objects move across the sky for 15 minutes and photographed them.
Their southwestward paths matched local wind; see the weather record. Repeated similar trajectories supported windborne objects. The lights looked white, compared by the witness to the Moon, rather than the usual sky-lantern colours. GEIPAN therefore favoured helium balloons with LED lighting, described as readily available for purchase. It notes that twilight can alter colour perception compared with full darkness and that Wednesday releases are less common than Saturday festivities. It classified this atypical sighting B: probable illuminated helium balloons.
