Case description

On 11 July 2013 at 22:30, a witness in Chagny (71) saw 3 bright orange lights appear and move silently northeast to southwest, then turn west and disappear one after another. They are barely visible in the recorded videos, but he included a photograph of a screen with his questionnaire. No other account was collected. GEIPAN finds this only slightly unusual and strongly suggestive of sky lanterns on similar paths. However, the northeast–southwest then westward movement does not exactly match northerly winds recorded in Dijon, 50 km away, or Mâcon, 60 km away. It fits better with the northeast wind recorded in Paray-le-Monial, 70 km away. The turn might result from local terrain effects or slight uncertainty or illusion in perceived direction. Without wind data very close to the site, GEIPAN classifies the low-strangeness case C.
