Case description
Early on 23 July 2013, a witness near Campan (65) saw a luminous sphere moving slowly and silently above a mountain ridge near home. Astronomical checks and several emails supplying more detail led GEIPAN to identify the Moon. The next day, about 1 hour later, the witness saw almost the same scene.
GEIPAN notes that this misidentification is fairly common under partly cloudy skies: a light close to the horizon can seem to fly over the landscape rather than be recognized as a celestial body. It classifies the case A: the full Moon setting.
