Case description
On Friday 26 July 2013 around 23:00 in Caudry (59), a witness saw an orange ball to the south disappear eastward, then saw something similar 15 minutes later.
He identified the Moon in the background of a photograph. However, GEIPAN notes that at 23:00 the Moon had not yet risen: it was only three-quarters full and rose in the east around 23:15. The grey circle is more probably camera-flash light reflected by dust. The photographs supplied were not in their original format.
Meteociel recorded very light wind at Cambrai, varying around north during the evening. GEIPAN considers the description consistent with 2 sky lanterns released less than 1 km south of the witness: the very light wind would have carried each only a short distance before it went out after a few minutes.
