Case description
On 9 October 2013 at about 17:45, 2 witnesses in Allonne saw a dark flying object with an ovoid upper part and cylindrical lower part. It was at an estimated height of about 50 m and moved slowly and silently. GEIPAN considers steady, silent low-altitude movement with the wind strongly suggestive of a helium-filled balloon, perhaps a child's balloon. Météociel recorded a westerly wind of about 15 km/h that day. Such balloons have many shapes and generally appear black when viewed against the light. GEIPAN considers this case only slightly unusual and classifies it as B: a probable helium balloon.
