Case description
On 18 January 2015, a witness reported an older observation at Aigues-Mortes (30). At 10:08 on 11 October 2013, he saw 9 faint points of light arranged like a checkerboard, gradually disappearing, and took photographs. No other accounts were collected.
The images and Google map placed his view northwest, with points moving slightly right to left. Nîmes-Garons recorded light northerly wind. GEIPAN found straight-moving points consistent with balloons reflecting sunlight and drifting with that wind. It cited a local celebration on “this day, 10 October”, although the stated observation date is 11 October. This inconsistency is unresolved.
GEIPAN explains that balloons carried by a northerly wind could approach horizontally while receding vertically as they climbed, eventually bursting. It classified the case B: probable party balloons. Given the low strangeness and delay exceeding 1 year, it did not pursue local enquiries to locate the release.
