Case description

On Tuesday 22 October 2013 at about 19:50, a driver noticed an object in the sky. He described a triangular shape defined by 3 red, green and blue lights. It was stationary, then moved slowly and silently. The lights became white before it disappeared. Only 1 account was collected. The attached investigation report identifies several objective features supporting an airliner: a scheduled flight was very probably present at the relevant time and azimuth; lights like its navigation lights outlined the triangle; the UAP’s movement matched the flight along the witness’s line of sight; and temporary, then final disappearance behind cloud fits an aircraft at high altitude passing behind patchy cloud layers. GEIPAN concludes that an airliner seen under particular conditions is probable. The case is classified B: probable observation of an aircraft on the scheduled Venice–London route, visible through its navigation lights and intermittently hidden by cloud. Uncertainty about the aircraft’s exact timing and doubts about the reported light colours prevent category A.
