On 9 December 2013 at 17:15, a witness in Romainville (93) saw 2 compact bright-red balls followed by 2 more in a clear sky. He took several photographs. They behaved like a squadron and disappeared while gaining height. Successive images show the lights entering from the left and receding ahead of the witness. The source says he looked southwest and the wind came from the southwest, yet considers windborne objects consistent with the sighting; these directions are retained as stated. It notes that all objects would naturally follow the same path. GEIPAN favors sky lanterns, while finding a weekday late afternoon unusual for a release. An early Christmas or Saint Nicholas celebration with children is suggested. GEIPAN did not search for the releasers. The case is classified as B: probable observation of sky lanterns.
