CHATELAY (39) 07.03.2014

On 7 March 2014 between 00:25 and 00:40, a person and their little girl in Chatelay saw a yellow-orange crescent-shaped object in the sky. The adult took photographs. GEIPAN finds the submitted photograph an exact match for the Moon's shape that day, which the source describes as 'first quarter at 34%'. The Moon was setting in the west-northwest, with astronomical moonset at 00:40. GEIPAN expresses surprise that the witness considered the sight unusual and claimed that the Moon rises and sets on the other side of the house. The source notes that the Moon, like the Sun, rises near the east and sets near the west. It suggests the little girl's fear at that late hour may have unsettled the adult. GEIPAN classifies the case as A: the setting Moon.
