SAINT-ESTEVE (66), Poitou-Charentes, FR
Open this case in the interactive AtlasCase description
On 17 May 2014, not 17 March as mistakenly written in the account, a witness and his wife in Saint-Estève (66) saw 5 or 6 red balls arrive from the northwest and move southeast. A second wave of about 15 identical balls followed, moving slowly and silently.
GEIPAN finds this typical of sky lanterns: orange balls traveling slowly in straight lines at low altitude with the wind on a weekend evening. Météociel data from Perpignan confirm a weakening northwest wind. It classifies the case B: very probable sky lanterns. Because the sighting was only slightly unusual, GEIPAN did not seek the people who released them.
