Open this case in the interactive AtlasCase description
In Cap-d'Ail (06), in the case dated 6 September 2014, a witness on the harbour breakwater saw 2 fairly bright orange lights vertically aligned. They moved randomly and were joined by several others. He thought they were released lanterns.
GEIPAN considers orange lights following the same path within less than 1 minute on a weekend night strongly suggestive of sky lanterns, probably released nearby after a private celebration. They moved north to south towards the sea. Nice recorded almost no wind; the source notes that the local breeze is very difficult to predict. GEIPAN finds the description entirely compatible with sky lanterns and classifies the case B: probable sky lanterns.
