Case description
Around 07:00 on 7 September 2014, many people in southern France, including the regions named in the title as Occitanie and Nouvelle-Aquitaine, saw a luminous phenomenon cross the sky. Local press covered it and GEIPAN received several accounts.
GEIPAN found all the characteristics of a meteoroid, a small rocky body orbiting the Sun, entering the atmosphere. The event occurred over Spanish Catalonia at a steep inclination of about 65°, between 60 and 25 km altitude. Astronomers stated that its trajectory was unrelated to asteroid 2014 RC, which passed within 40,000 km of Earth that day; the events were not connected.
Multiple accounts and recordings from several cameras gave the case the maximum evidential-strength score of 1. After analysis its strangeness was very low. GEIPAN classified it A: observations of a large fireball from meteoroid entry.
