PELLOUAILLES-LES-VIGNES (49) 07.09.2014

On 7 September 2014 at about 01:00, a witness in Pellouailles-les-Vignes saw red-orange lights follow different paths as they gained altitude, then go out. GEIPAN considers several red-orange lights moving slowly for a few minutes late on a weekend night strongly suggestive of sky lanterns. Weather records indicate very light, unstable wind. Local wind was therefore indeterminate and subject to changing influences; GEIPAN explains that temporary local breezes could produce nearly random movement of windborne objects. It classifies the case as B: probable sky lanterns.
