Between midnight and 12:30 a.m. on September 13–14, 2014, witnesses saw successive groups of round yellow lights in the Val-de-Marne sky between Champigny-sur-Marne and Créteil. They came from the northeast, moving slowly, silently and in straight lines. Witnesses estimated about forty lights; two accounts were collected. The Air Transport Gendarmerie investigated directly, at a time of particular attention to low-flying objects such as drones. It established a release of thirty-five sky lanterns celebrating a civil partnership. The organisers had requested and received prefectural authorisation.
