Case description
On 28 September 2014 between 21:02 and 21:08, a motorist saw about 10 twinkling lights move slowly and silently through the night sky. They traveled in the same direction, at the same speed and apparently low altitude. As they receded, they looked like small red-glowing halos. Other motorists were stopped on the road, but no other account was collected.
Orange or red lights crossing the sky over a few minutes on a weekend night strongly suggest sky lanterns, probably released nearby after a private party. The west-to-northeast movement is considered compatible with the south wind recorded at Roissy (see the map and Météociel record).
The source explains that lanterns' relatively low brightness often causes witnesses to overestimate their distance and therefore their size.
GEIPAN classifies the case B: probable sky lanterns.
