MULHOUSE (68) 25.12.2014

On 25 December 2014 at 00:45, a witness looking through windows in Mulhouse (68) saw red lights moving west to east in 2 successive passages. The French describes “2 lights” seen “twice in succession,” without clearly resolving whether this means 2 in total or 2 on each passage. No particular sound was heard. He followed them until they disappeared toward the Black Forest. No other account was collected. GEIPAN finds red balls crossing the sky over several minutes on a festive night suggestive of sky lanterns, probably released nearby after a private party. West-to-east movement matches westerly winds of 11–24 km/h recorded at Basel-Mulhouse at 01:00 on 25 December; see Météociel data. However, the wind had changed direction several times that night. GEIPAN classifies the case B: probable sky lanterns.
