Case description
On 1 January 2015 at 04:25, witnesses in Romans-sur-Isère saw around 20 colored balls of light moving silently across the sky. One account was collected. GEIPAN considers orange balls crossing the sky in a few minutes on a festive night strongly suggestive of sky lanterns, probably released nearby after a private party, as often happens on New Year's night. The movement was north to south, compatible with the northerly wind recorded by Météociel at Orange. GEIPAN classifies the case as B: a very probable sighting of sky lanterns, adding that the witness's videos leave no doubt about this hypothesis. It separately notes that the first observation described could also have been a windborne party object of a less common design than a conventional sky lantern.
