Open this case in the interactive AtlasCase description
On 22 February 2015 at 03:03, a witness looking through a window in Kerlouan (29) saw an orange glow move across a clear sky. He eventually counted 27 identical lights coming from north-northeast and disappearing eastward at what he described as tremendous speed. The observation lasted 34 minutes without sound. He took no photographs, and no other account was collected.
GEIPAN retained a sky-lantern explanation; see the investigation notes. Colour, brightness, duration, number, day and time, and identical trajectories all support it. The people who released them were not identified. GEIPAN interprets the rapid eastward disappearance as extinguishing flames, with fading brightness perceived as rapid recession, as commonly reported in such cases.
The case is classified B: probable observation of sky lanterns released after a private celebration.
