On 7 April 2015 at 22:30, a woman saw several lights that seemed to move very rapidly. They remained visible for more than an hour before she stopped watching. She gave her video to the Sud-Ouest newspaper. Weather records at Cognac show a northwesterly wind of 20–30 km/h. Military air-traffic control supplied GEIPAN with radar tracks showing aircraft flying circuits at Cognac-Châteaubernard air base (see the flight-path map). Air Base 709 confirmed substantial night-training traffic that evening. The witness had called the same base during the sighting and been told there was no traffic. GEIPAN suggests that the person answering may not have been qualified to inform the public about military operations. The case is classified A, fully identified as repeated passes by military aircraft practising night flying.
