MENNECY (91) 13.06.2015

On 13 June 2015 at 23:20, several people on a terrace in Mennecy saw an orange shape move silently in a straight line across the sky. At 00:05 after midnight, 2 of them again saw a silently moving orange shape. Intrigued, they called the gendarmerie, which sent a patrol. One witness account was collected. GEIPAN considers orange balls crossing the sky in a few minutes on a weekend night strongly suggestive of sky lanterns, probably released nearby after a private party. The observed movement was first northwest to southwest, then east to west. GEIPAN considers this compatible with the light wind recorded at Orly, from the north at 23:00 and turning northeasterly around midnight. The source refers to the Météociel records for 23:00 and 00:00, and for 01:00 on Sunday 14 June. GEIPAN classifies the case as B: a probable sighting of sky lanterns.
