VIEU (01) 20.06.2015

On 20 June 2015 at about 23:00, a woman driving saw 3 red-orange lights move silently north to south. At the same time, a vivid green light crossed east to west. These were 2 distinct phenomena: the 3 orange lights moved slowly for several minutes, while the very bright green light moved extremely rapidly westward. The witness naturally linked them, but the concurrence was coincidental. The first lights have all the characteristics of sky lanterns, commonly released after weddings or other celebrations on summer Saturday nights. Their southward drift matches the north wind recorded at Lyon-Saint-Exupéry (see the weather record). The green light has all the characteristics of a fireball. Several witnesses simultaneously saw it in Ain, Saône-et-Loire, Nièvre and Rhône. The BOAM camera network did not record it, probably because of cloud at the camera sites. GEIPAN classifies the case B: probable sky lanterns observed simultaneously with a fireball.
