Case description

On 16 August 2015 between 00:40 and 00:45, a witness with friends in Valras-Plage (34) saw 3 equally spaced white lights forming a perfect triangle. The object moved slowly and silently, then suddenly disappeared. His friends had no time to see it. No other account was collected. He perceived a thin black triangle between the lights. GEIPAN considers this possibly a contour or shape illusion and refers to Gestalt psychology. The westward motion appears inconsistent with the westerly wind recorded at Béziers if these were windborne lights. However, the sighting was very brief and a local coastal breeze remained possible. The evidential strength is low because of the brief observation and the lack of any sighting by those accompanying him. If a contour illusion is accepted, GEIPAN considers the case only slightly unusual and compatible with illuminated balloons, such as LED balloons or sky lanterns, commonly released at celebrations. The source describes the festive context as the evening of 15 August in a tourist area, preceding the after-midnight sighting. The wind record neither confirms nor excludes the hypothesis. GEIPAN classifies the case as C for lack of information and corroboration.
