Open this case in the interactive AtlasCase description
On 19 September 2015, a witness in Bidart (64), watching the stars and particularly Ursa Minor, saw 3 steady gray luminous spots move together in a straight line in an isosceles triangle. There was no trail, halo or sound. They faded gradually over 1 second. The entire sighting lasted 8 seconds. Immediately afterward, he watched an aircraft cross the UAP's path. No other account was collected.
He could not supply an exact time but linked the sighting to a French try in a rugby match against Italy. This enabled the investigator to determine a time of 22:31; see the investigation report. Aircraft, satellites and rocket-launch explanations could therefore be investigated.
GEIPAN judges the case moderately unusual but sufficiently supported by evidence and considers a flock of birds lit from below by a ground source possible. The spots' extended rather than point-like appearance and rapid angular speed fit this hypothesis. Two potential ground light sources lie in the reported direction and could have illuminated birds from beneath.
The French summary calls birds probable, while the narrative's final wording is classification B: possible misidentification of a flock illuminated by a nighttime light source.
