On Sunday 29 November 2015, rather than 30 November as stated in the official report, a driver was surprised to see 4 orange lights appear successively in the night sky. They all moved slowly, silently and in a straight line. He filmed the scene with his mobile phone. Only 1 account was collected.
GEIPAN finds the available evidence and reconstruction consistent with a sky-lantern release (see the investigation report): movement with the wind; matching appearance, colour and brightness; the characteristic succession of several lights; and a weekend date conducive to celebrations.
The only doubt concerns the wind match. The witness supplied no precise direction of travel or details about his perception of the wind, including whether he was sheltered. However, the video suggests south-to-north movement, matching wind measurements at surrounding stations 15–20 km away. In combination with the other evidence, this keeps the hypothesis probable.
Evidential support is poor because of the limited information from the witness. Fortunately, the video, despite its poor quality, indicates a probable direction of travel.
GEIPAN classifies the case B: probable observation of sky lanterns.
